Fietskaart Wales - Lon Las Cymru South | Sustrans | 1:110.000 | ISBN 9781910845486
Lon Las Cymru, the 251 mile cycling challenge from Holyhead to Cardiff or Chepstow, takes in a wide variety of memorable landscapes from the valleys of South Wales to the pastoral lanes of Angelsey, passing though the magnificent National Parks of Snowdonia and the Brecon Beacons. A few improvements remain to be made but it is already a perfect way to get to know the country as car-borne tourists never can.
The southern half of the route connects the attractive starting points of Cardiff or Chepstow to Llandiloes in the heart if Wales. The largely traffic free Taff Trail connects Cardiff to Brecon via the industrial heritage valleys of Merthyr Tydfil and Taff Vale: alternatively minor roads link Chepstow to Hay on Wye via Abergavenny (Route 42). The stunning Llanthony Valley gives a magnificent taste of the black mountains, but you should take special care on its narrow and twisting bends.
There are good rail links to Chepstow, Newport, Cardiff, Pontypridd, Merthyr Tydfil and Abergavenny and the Heart of Wales line serves Builth Road (north of Built Wells).
If you are looking to tackle the trail over severl days it can be easily be broken down into several sections with plenty of spaces to stay along the way.
